D1NZ Final
It would be fair to say that Castrol Edge driver Daniel 'Fanga Dan' Woolhouse has had a trying season.
Faced with a car that's 200kg heavier and about 200hp down on other top competitors, Woolhouse has had to battle all season for results and at times has simply seemed to be out of sorts with his abilities which are acknowledged as being among the best in the competition. Then D1NZ round 5 at Whangarei happened, and it was almost like a rejuvenated 'Fanga' appeared. A strong second place finish would set up a run home that gave Woolhouse a shot at reclaiming the Drift King title that he held back in 2006.
Going into the final round at Hampton Downs, Woolhouse was in 4th place with a 6 point gap to team mate Gaz Whiter, and knowing that he would have to win the event to unseat pace setters Mad Mike Whiddett and Curt Whittaker. You never ever bet against Woolhouse though at Hampton Downs, where in his last few outings he has always been in the final 4, and is a good bet to go to the final.
Evident right from when the first tires were destroyed on Friday morning, the Castrol machine was on a mission with smoke billowing off the tires as 'Fanga' got right back on his preferred lines and proceeded to show out strongly in practice. If you were in the pits, Woolhouse would have been a driver that you did not want to be battling come competition time as he was fast, consistent and aggressive.
Qualifying strongly, Woolhouse would meet Australian visitor Nigel Petrie in battle first, with the Aussie battler taking him to a one more time battle before Woolhouse would move on to a huge top 8 battle with title race leader Mad Mike Whiddett. In a battle that will go down in history as perhaps being one of those 'defining moments', the judges could not separate Woolhouse and Whiddett and sent them around for a one more time, during which Whiddett would unexpectedly contact the rear of the Castrol Commodore and give Woolhouse an unbeatable 10-0 advantage in their battle. It would mean a nervous wait for Whiddett as he had to then sit and wait on other results to see how his season would end. Into the top 4 and a battle with Brad Lauder awaited, Woolhouse being too strong as he charged towards a season decided with Curt Whittaker in the Whittaker Motorsport/ Team Dilusi Skyline.
Truly it was a battle of epic proportions, the judges simply unable to separate the pair as both had eyes set on a final round win, and the top step of the podium. Eventually, it would be Whittaker who triumphed in a hard fought affair, both drivers acknowledging each other in a sign of respect.
Woolhouse home in second for the round, and ending the season in 3rd place overall.

AE86
Some interesting feedback on the new AE86 and please keep it coming we love your comments and ideas!
It was always one of my dreams to build the commodore as a drift car and who would have thought a massive heavy commodore would have been able to keep up with some of the small light cars and get me on the podium.
It’s something that’s totally different and it challenges me as a driver this keeps the events exciting and the adrenalin pumping.
If I was still steering the S15 around I think the crowd would be bored and so would I as a driver, we all know they are proven to be reliable drift cars.
So now I’ve been there and done that I’m looking for a new challenge so why not bring it on!
Keep checking back for more updates
Cheers FDC
