D1NZ Final

It would be fair to say that Castrol Edge driver Daniel 'Fanga Dan' Woolhouse has had a trying season.

Faced with a car that's 200kg heavier and about 200hp down on other top competitors, Woolhouse has had to battle all season for results and at times has simply seemed to be out of sorts with his abilities which are acknowledged as being among the best in the competition. Then D1NZ round 5 at Whangarei happened, and it was almost like a rejuvenated 'Fanga' appeared. A strong second place finish would set up a run home that gave Woolhouse a shot at reclaiming the Drift King title that he held back in 2006.

Going into the final round at Hampton Downs, Woolhouse was in 4th place with a 6 point gap to team mate Gaz Whiter, and knowing that he would have to win the event to unseat pace setters Mad Mike Whiddett and Curt Whittaker. You never ever bet against Woolhouse though at Hampton Downs, where in his last few outings he has always been in the final 4, and is a good bet to go to the final.

Evident right from when the first tires were destroyed on Friday morning, the Castrol machine was on a mission with smoke billowing off the tires as 'Fanga' got right back on his preferred lines and proceeded to show out strongly in practice. If you were in the pits, Woolhouse would have been a driver that you did not want to be battling come competition time as he was fast, consistent and aggressive.

Qualifying strongly, Woolhouse would meet Australian visitor Nigel Petrie in battle first, with the Aussie battler taking him to a one more time battle before Woolhouse would move on to a huge top 8 battle with title race leader Mad Mike Whiddett.  In a battle that will go down in history as perhaps being one of those 'defining moments', the judges could not separate Woolhouse and Whiddett and sent them around for a one more time, during which Whiddett would unexpectedly contact the rear of the Castrol Commodore and give Woolhouse an unbeatable 10-0 advantage in their battle. It would mean a nervous wait for Whiddett as he had to then sit and wait on other results to see how his season would end.  Into the top 4 and a battle with Brad Lauder awaited, Woolhouse being too strong as he charged towards a season decided with Curt Whittaker in the Whittaker Motorsport/ Team Dilusi Skyline.

Truly it was a battle of epic proportions, the judges simply unable to separate the pair as both had eyes set on a final round win, and the top step of the podium. Eventually, it would be Whittaker who triumphed in a hard fought affair, both drivers acknowledging each other in a sign of respect.

Woolhouse home in second for the round, and ending the season in 3rd place overall.

D1NZ Round 5 Whangarei 2012

Fanga Dan- 2 + 2 = 4th

If ever there was a round that Daniel "Fanga Dan" Woolhouse wanted to win, then this was it. Woolhouse and his family were responsible for sighting, and then gaining agreement for the purpose built course located at Ruakaka, just south of Whangarei that played host to the Cody's D1NZ National Drifting Champs Round 5.

Woolhouse looked to be a man on a mission in the Castrol Edge Commodore, and had the home crowd right behind him and he bagged up his collection of GT radial tires lap after lap, with the occasional contact with a curb. As only Fanga can, he broke not one but 2 rims, then had a go at hitting them straight with a sledgehammer before casting them aside with a grin and simply shrugging his shoulders and heading back out for another lap.

Fridays practice sessions would see 2 destroyed rims, 12 shredded brand new tires, and the wing on the car removed not once but 3 times by getting just a little to close to the hay bales lining the track.  Happy with his lines, Woolhouse seemed to spend just as much time 'scrubbing' tires in on the round about as doing practice lap for the small but appreciative crowd present.

Saturday was wet and cold, but a hardy crowd of over 2000 turned up to support the home town boys, with big things expected from Driftcorp members Gaz Whiter and Robee Nelson, who would join Woolhouse in the field flying the famous or perhaps infamous Dcorp banner. The Castrol Commodore was on song all day, happily powering smoothly through the course hitting cliping point after clipping point, and it would be that form which would see Daniel as the #2 qualifier behind the Redbull Rx7 of Mad Mike Whiddett.

A first round battle with battle with Sky Zhao posed little problem for Woolhouse who was hungry for a home victory to get his campaign back on track after a couple of disappointing rounds. Into the top 8 and young Hugo Mclean threw everything at the Castrol Commodore, with his car basicly looking like a wreck by the end of the battle, his windscreen shattering on the chase run. Fanga then went into the top 4 with another young gun Niko Reid who would push Daniel all the way and force a one more time battle before eventually moving through to the final with #1 qualifer Mad Mike.

The Final was a fitting battle, and while not the dream battle with team mate Gaz Whiter that many wanted, Woolhouse and Whiddett put on an amazing display, having to re-run the final being called dead even in the first battle. Unfortunately on the 2nd battle, Fanga made a small error and that was all it took to consign him to a still admirable second place, the Mad one taking the event win.

Woolhouse now moves up into 4th place in the title race, with a mathematical chance at taking the title if results go his way.

Daniel and his team as always want to thank all the teams sponsors, and a special thanks to the people of Northland for coming out to support the event
